Full Overview
Japan has emerged as a ‘haven in troubled times.’ The Nikkei 225 reached a historic high in February - buoyed by dovish monetary policies and corporate reforms - the cheap yen is driving a tourist boom, and wage hikes have reached levels unseen in thirty years. However questions surrounding Japan’s broader economic health are coming to light, amidst a weakening currency, geopolitical tensions and tectonic shifts in Asian stock markets.
Performance disparities have been evident across Asia this past year. Where Japan boasted double-digit price returns in 2023, other nations, including China, illustrated lacklustre growth. China’s stock indices have since seen a resurgence, with the MSCI China Index gaining over 10% since March. Capital outflow from China into Japan was high at the start of 2024. This has since slowed. How will the fate of the world’s second-largest economy impact Japanese market dynamics? What will the future of capital flows in the region be, and how well is Japan positioned for reallocation? Will global investor sentiment remain positive?
This Financial Times webinar, in partnership with Nikkei Inc, explored the factors governing capital flows in Asia, examined the impact of geopolitics and discussed projections for future growth in Japan.
